Vodafone’s procurement arm, Accenture and SAP showcased results of a humanoid robot trial at one of the operator unit’s warehouses, highlighting the machine’s ability to identify issues and possible efficiencies at the site. The pilot, at a Vodafone Procure & Connect facility in Duisburg, Germany, was conducted to explore the potential for physical AI and humanoid robots within supply chains. Results of the project were presented at the Hannover Messe trade show, which is being held in the German city this week. In a statement, the trio explained the robot conducted visual inspection tasks autonomously and worked alongside existing systems at the site. It was able to identify operational inefficiencies, safety risks and “optimisation opportunities across warehouse processes”. Among the specific elements detected and assessed by the machine were misplaced products, pallet stacking weight and distribution, and potential hazards on the warehouse floor. “The robot reported its findings and recommendations directly into the SAP system, enabling real-time visibility and more informed operational decision-making,” the three added. Accenture designed and deployed the robot intelligence and operational framework, while SAP led integration of the robots and supplied the warehouse management system. Vodafone Procure & Connect global network logistics director Reinhard Plaza Bartsch said the trial explored “how humanoid robotics can improve efficiency, safety and operational visibility in our warehouse operations”. “It also gives us a clearer view of how these capabilities could scale across our supply chain and support future business models.” Accenture advanced robotics lead Christian Souche added the digital twin-trained robots “can reduce worker injuries and other warehouse safety incidents and lower overtime costs and the dependency on temporary labour”.
