GSM-7 Encoding

Standard SMS encoding supports 128 characters including A-Z, 0-9, and common symbols. Each SMS can hold 160 characters (153 in multipart). Extended characters (€, ^, {}, etc.) count as 2 characters.

UCS-2 (Unicode)

When your message contains emojis, Chinese, Arabic, Hindi, or other non-GSM characters, the encoding switches to UCS-2. Each SMS can only hold 70 characters (67 in multipart).
