Understanding India's PIN Code System
PIN stands for Postal Index Number. It is a 6-digit code used by India Post to identify every delivery post office in India. The PIN code system was introduced on 15 August 1972 by Shriram Bhikaji Velankar, who was an additional secretary in the Union Ministry of Communications.
PIN Code Structure
| Digit(s) | Meaning | Details |
|---|---|---|
| 1st digit | Postal Zone | One of 9 geographical zones (1-8) or Army (9) |
| 2nd digit | Sub-zone | Together with the 1st digit, forms the postal circle |
| 3rd digit | Sorting District | Identifies the sorting / revenue district |
| 4th-6th digits | Post Office | Individual post office within the sorting district |

Types of Post Offices
| Type | Description | Typical Location |
|---|---|---|

India Post Circles
India Post is divided into 23 postal circles, each headed by a Chief Postmaster General. These circles mostly correspond to states, with some states sharing a circle and larger states having their own.
PIN code data is based on the India Post postal system. The PIN code system was introduced in 1972 and is maintained by the Department of Posts, Government of India.
