SI (Decimal) Units

SI units use powers of 10. 1 KB = 1,000 B, 1 MB = 1,000,000 B. These are used by hard drive manufacturers, network speeds, and the SI standard. Bandwidth is typically measured in bits per second (bps) while storage uses bytes (B).

Binary (IEC) Units

Binary units use powers of 2. 1 KiB = 1,024 B, 1 MiB = 1,048,576 B. These are used by operating systems, RAM, and the IEC standard. The "i" distinguishes them: KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB. This explains why a "1 TB" drive shows ~931 GiB in your OS.
