Frequently Asked Questions

Is 5G available in my city?

Jio 5G covers 700+ cities and all state capitals. Airtel 5G Plus is available in 500+ cities. Use the state-wise table above to check your area. You can also check the Jio or Airtel apps for tower-level coverage maps.

Do I need a new SIM card for 5G?

No. Both Jio and Airtel activate 5G on your existing 4G SIM. You just need a 5G-capable smartphone and to be in a 5G coverage area. No SIM swap or plan upgrade is required.

Which phones support 5G in India?

Most smartphones launched since 2022 support 5G, including iPhone 12 and newer, Samsung Galaxy S21+, OnePlus Nord CE 3, Pixel 7, Xiaomi 13, and many budget devices like Redmi Note 12 5G. Check your phone’s specifications for 5G NR band support.

Is 5G harmful to health?

No. According to the WHO and ICNIRP, 5G radio waves are non-ionizing and pose no known health risk at the power levels used by telecom towers. India’s emission norms are 10x stricter than global ICNIRP guidelines.

When will India have full 5G coverage?

Urban and semi-urban areas are expected to have comprehensive 5G coverage by end of 2026. Rural coverage will depend on the 700 MHz band rollout by Jio and government-backed BSNL 4G/5G expansion, likely extending into 2027–2028.

Is 5G faster than fiber broadband?

5G can match or exceed fiber speeds in ideal conditions (1–10 Gbps), but fiber offers more consistent low-latency performance. 5G is best for mobile and last-mile connectivity where fiber isn’t available.
