Huawei launched its latest foldable smartphone with a fresh wide-screen form factor, expanding its premium portfolio as competition intensifies in China’s high-end handset segment. The Pura X Max features a horizontal design that opens from a 5.4-inch external display into a 7.7-inch flexible tablet-style inner screen, measuring 11.2mm thick when folded and reducing to 5.2mm when unfolded. The form factor shifts away from typical narrow book-style foldables to offer a broader viewing screen. In imaging, the device’s triple camera setup comprises a 50MP main sensor with variable aperture, a 50MP telephoto lens and a 12.5MP ultra-wide camera, alongside an additional colour sensor. Its front facing cameras include 8MP sensors on both the outer and inner displays. Under the hood, the handset is powered by Huawei’s Kirin 9030 Pro chipset and a 5,300mAh battery, supporting 66W wired and 50W wireless charging. It runs HarmonyOS 6.1, includes support for the Huawei M-Pen 3 Mini stylus and offers both dual SIM and eSIM support. The Pura X Max also features a suite of AI-powered imaging and productivity tools including gesture control. Positioned in the premium tier of Huawei’s lineup, the foldable starts at CNY10,999 ($1,613) and ranges up to CNY13,999 ($2053) for the highest specification variant. Hotting up With Apple’s expected foldable entry later this year, competition is hotting up in the segment. Last month, Oppo targeted durability and a “zero-feel” screen crease with the launch of its Find N6 foldable , while Samsung expanded its lineup last year with the Galaxy Z Fold7 , prioritising a slimmer profile. Rivals competing in the segment also include Honor, Motorola and Google. Alongside the foldable, Huawei launched its Pura 90 series, priced from CNY4,699 ($689). Although pricing has largely tracked the previous generation , according to Bloomberg , Huawei consumer business chief Richard Yu warned memory chip constraints could force higher prices. “We might have to hike prices later if we cannot sustain the costs,” he reportedly said during a presentation.
