France-based Thales Alenia Space struck an agreement with Poland’s Radmor and Airbus to develop a telecoms defence satellite for the Polish armed forces, strengthening ties between the two countries. The new geostationary satellite will offer secure communications for Poland’s Ministry of Defense, “ensuring a high-level of robustness and resilience” at a time of high-intensity conflicts in a more congested space environment. The system will be “cyber-secured across ground and space segments”, resistant to threats and boosting Poland’s national space sovereignty. Thales Alenia Space, a joint venture between Thales and aerospace giant Leonardo, will work with Radmor and Airbus Defense and Space to combine respective expertise in military communication payloads, mission control, efficient satellite platform design and industrialisation, as well as secure ground infrastructure and cybersecurity. The agreement was signed during a ceremony attended by French President Emmanuel Macron and Poland Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The companies added the project marks longstanding industrial cooperation between the two countries and forms part of the European Commission’s Readiness 2030 plan. Herve Derrey, CEO of Thales Alenia Space, said the satellite will ensure the highest standards of resilience, cybersecurity and anti jamming technologies, “reflecting our commitment to strengthening European defence sovereignty”. Alain Faure, head of Space Systems at Airbus Defense and Space, added the partnership “is what Europe working together is all about”.
