Vodafone unveiled a fresh AI-powered scam call detection tool on its consumer security service Secure Net Mobile, as the operator moves to counter rising fraud and nuisance traffic on mobile networks. Vodafone explained the new Scam Call Protection feature identifies and flags suspected fraudulent, spam and nuisance calls before customers answer. Built directly into the network, the tool analyses incoming calls in real time to detect suspicious behaviour and identify known scam numbers round the clock. When a call is deemed high risk, users receive an on-screen alert enabling them to decide whether to answer or decline. The feature aims to strengthen Vodafone’s Secure Net Mobile service, which already offers parental controls, 24/7 ID monitoring and malware protection. The tool requires no additional apps or setup, with protection activated automatically for existing Secure Net Mobile customers. The operator is also offering Secure Net Mobile free for the first three months to mobile subscribers, after which it carries a £2 monthly subscription cost. Rob Winterschladen, consumer director at VodafoneThree, said “scam calls are becoming increasingly harder to spot, and it’s easy to feel caught off guard”. He added the feature gives customers “an extra layer of reassurance” by “constantly working in the background to monitor calls, and flagging known and suspected scam calls”. Earlier this year, Vodafone Group teamed up with Nokia on a wider initiative to take the fight to cybercrime across Europe, including network APIs within the vendor’s anti-fraud and authentication products.
