Verizon struck a deal with World Cup 2026 organiser FIFA to connect the upcoming football tournament with its 5G, fibre, fixed wireless access (FWA), and broadcast services, delivering more connected, immersive and operational experiences across host stadiums. Verizon’s advanced technology and network infrastructure are being deployed across stadiums, FIFA Fan Festival locations and various operational aspects to improve the way fans, officials, broadcasters and local communities engage with the football games. The tournament, held across the US, Canada and Mexico, starts on 11 June. With spectators expected to use over 50 terabytes of data within a stadium for each match, Verizon made significant network upgrades, adding more 5G spectrum to boost capacity by an estimated three to five times across all host stadiums. The mobile operator will improve the fan experience by installing thousands of under-seat antennas and large ball-shaped antennas to deliver targeted 4G and 5G coverage, making it easier to watch highlights, check stats, pay for concessions by mobile, and share on social media. It also deployed nearly 140 small cells and temporary cell sites to boost coverage and capacity around venues, transit corridors and nearby events. Verizon’s technology will support tournament operations and global broadcasting via the FIFA Broadcast Contribution Network for high-quality video delivery, private 5G for low latency use cases such as referee body cameras and 5G FWA for pop-up activations and logistics. Additionally, FIFA and Verizon will test 5G network slicing to support applications which require priority performance. Verizon Business CEO Kyle Malady stated the 2026 FIFA World Cup will unite technology and communities, with its 5G and fibre networks enabling seamless fan experiences while creating a “lasting digital legacy in host cities”. The operator is the Official Telecommunication Services Sponsor for FIFA World Cup 2026 and Official Tournament Supporter for FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027.
