The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) advanced a voluntary cybersecurity programme for consumer IoT equipment by appointing a lead administrator for the scheme. ioXT Alliance is to head the US Cyber Trust Mark Programme, an initiative grounded in concerns a lot of consumer equipment could prove a threat national security. FCC chair Brendan Carr said the hope is the initiative would “help consumers make informed decisions about the products they bring into their homes”. The lead administrator is expected to “implement the programme in a way that is consistent with that vision”, he explained. In the early days of the plan, the FCC explained qualified consumer IoT devices would be allowed to bear a trust mark which it hoped would guide buyers towards safer devices. The nation is on a mission to improve security due to concerns many consumer devices are providing easy access to people of malintent, particularly those from overseas. Last month, the FCC ended authorisation of non-domestic internet routers beyond items already in the supply chain, highlighting at least three cyberattacks had occurred due to insecure equipment.
