China’s government outlined plans to open the telecoms sector through a range of measures designed to provide a boost to the country’s services industry, as part of the nation’s latest five-year plan which runs through to 2030. The nation’s ambassador to the US Xie Feng ( pictured ), discussed the latest five-year plan during a roundtable in the US state of Indiana, outlining steps it plans to take around the services sector to support industry, better the lives of citizens and boost employment. Xie said it has plans to expand trials for value-added telecoms services, boost imports to promote balanced trade, expand two-way investment cooperation and ensure national treatment for foreign-funded enterprises. He also said China would strive to improve IP protection, explore the scope of trademark protection and broaden channels for resolving IP disputes. Finally, China plans to “accelerate” the reform of the government procurement system and fully implement the principle of fair competition. In addition to telecoms, Xie said it would take similar steps in biotechnology and wholly foreign-owned hospitals, while focusing on advancements in areas including intelligent robots, aviation, aerospace, integrated circuits and more. He also pointed to six future industries where it aims to “move faster from technological breakthroughs to practical applications”, and “nurture new drivers of economic growth”, including embodied AI and 6G communications. The ambassador noted more multinationals are establishing R&D centres in China, seeing the country “as a testing ground for global competitiveness and a hub for value creation”. “For American SMEs in particular, China is the ideal place to turn their vision into reality, grow and prosper”.
