DNS Record Types

  • A - Maps domain to IPv4 address
  • AAAA - Maps domain to IPv6 address
  • MX - Mail server for the domain
  • NS - Authoritative nameservers
  • TXT - Text records (SPF, DKIM, etc.)
  • CNAME - Canonical name (alias)
  • SOA - Start of authority record

How DNS Works

DNS (Domain Name System) translates human-readable domain names into IP addresses. When you visit a website, your browser queries DNS servers to find the IP address of the server hosting that domain. DNS records are cached at multiple levels (browser, OS, ISP) to speed up lookups.
